The interdisciplinary nature of our Program promotes the selection of a faculty member from across the UA campus as a mentor, from over 70 faculty members in Colleges of Medicine, Agriculture and Life Sciences, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Science. Diseases today are complex, and our students are trained to think broadly about the scientific problems at all levels of biological organization. Thus our research covers cell and molecular systems as well as whole animal and human systems.

Our faculty study Diabetes, Hypertension, Cancer, Asthma, Cardiovascular disease, Kidney disease, Lung disease, Neurological disorders such as Parkinson's, Sleep apnea and Movement disorders.  There are no clear lines of demarcation between these areas of research. Indeed, interactions across research areas and diseases are common and often result in coauthorship of publications and joint submission of research proposals.
