Transportation in Tucson

The University of Arizona campus is located in Central Tucson, and spans several blocks between Speedway Boulevard and 6th St. The Physiological Sciences Graduate Program is geographically split into two major areas: the University Medical Center (UMC) and surrounding buildings, located north of main campus on Campbell between Speedway Boulevard and Grant St., and Life Sciences South and surrounding buildings located at Park Ave. and 4th St.

As a first-year student, most of your classes will be at the University Medical Center, but the laboratory in which you rotate may be on main campus, a 20 minute walk from the UMC. Depending on your circumstances, you may want to consider the following forms of transportation:

CatTran

The University of Arizona offers a free on-campus shuttle service called CatTran. These shuttles arrive every 10-15 minutes and allow easy, reliable commuting from the UMC to main campus via the Purple and Teal lines.

Bicycles

Many University students ride bicycles to the campus. Tucson has a network of specifically designated bike routes (see Tucson Bike Map, particularly in the residential areas north and east of campus. Good bicycle parking is available on campus, but a sturdy bicycle lock is a must!

SunTran

SunTran is Tucson’s public transportation system, with 36 bus lines throughout the city, including several that stop at the University of Arizona campus. A U-Pass can be purchased on a semester basis, at 50% off the normal price for a bus pass.

Cars and Motorcycles / On-Campus Parking

Students who prefer to commute to campus by automobile or motorcycle will find that on-street parking is rather limited. While there is a generic parking permit for motorcycle parking, University of Arizona Parking and Transportation Services offers the following parking permits for cars:

  • Zone 1 Parking Permit: The Zone 1 permit allows you to park in any Zone 1 parking lot.

  • Lot-specific / Garage-Specific Parking Permit: You can purchase a lot-specific or garage-specific parking permit, allowing you to park in a single lot.

  • Off-campus Parking Permit: There a few off-campus lots not shown on the Campus Parking Map included in this packet. They are the most economical option of the parking permits. These lots are accessible by CatTran and the 9003 lot is on the east side of Campbell, across the street from the UMC.

You can view pricing information or register for a parking permit at University of Arizona Parking and Transportation Services.
