Program Timelines

To help keep our current students on track throughout their programs, the following are timelimes demonstrating when Program requirements should be completed for both the Master's and PhD programs:

MS Timeline

Sample Master's Career

This table represents a sample career of a generic Master's student (with a Research assistantship), and is subject to change depending on the student's financial aid and the study plan developed by the student and their Master's Committee.

1st Year

Fall:

PSIO 503 - Cellular & Molecular Physiology (6 units)

PS 696c - Student Forum (1 unit)

PSIO 696a - Physiology Seminar (1 unit)

PSIO 610/PS 700 - Lab Rotation  (3 units) 

PS 6967a - Teaching Workshop (1 unit) *Only if a TA.

Submit the Responsible Conduct of Research Statement GradPath form.

Complete two Lab Rotation Forms:  One at the beginning of the term and one at the end of the term.

Spring:

PSIO 603a - Systems Physiology (6 units)

PS 696c - Student Forum (1 unit)

PSIO/PS 900 - Research Units (4 units) OR if second lab rotation is needed, PSIO 610/PS 700 - Lab Rotation  (3 units)

2nd Year

Fall:

PS 696c - Student Forum (1 unit)

PSIO 696a - Physiology Seminar (1 unit)

PS/PSIO 900/910 - Research Units (4 units)

Complete GradPath Forms:  Responsible Conduct of Research Statement, Plan of Study, and Master's/Specialist Committee Appointment Form

Complete 20-30 minute Forum Presentation

Form Master's Committee for research defense

Spring:

PS 696c - Student Forum (1 unit)

PSIO 696a - Physiology Seminar (1 unit)

PS/PSIO 900/910 - Research Units (4 units)

Complete and Defend Master's Thesis/Research Manuscript

*Many Master's students are required to assume roles as teaching or research assistants to maintain their financial aid, in addition to satisfying the coursework required for a Master's degree.

PhD Timeline

This table represents a sample career of a generic Doctoral student, and is subject to change depending on the study plan developed by the student and mentor.

1st Year

Complete two lab rotation forms for both the Fall and Spring terms:  One at the beginning of each term and one at the end of each term.

Fall:

PSIO 503 - Cellular & Molecular Physiology (6 units)

PSIO 696a - Physiology Seminar (1 unit)

PS 700/PSIO 610 - Laboratory Rotation (3 units)

PS 595b - Scientific Writing Strategies (2 units)

PS 700/PSIO 610 - Laboratory Rotation (3 units)

PSIO 697b - Teaching Workshop (1 unit): TA for either 201 or 202

Choose an Advisor & Join a Lab, by end of second lab rotation

*Summer:
PS 700 - Laboratory Rotation (3 units - if neccesary, summer registration not required)

2nd Year

Complete first 20-30 minute Forum Presentation

Fall:

PS 696c - Student Forum (1 unit)

PSIO 696a - Physiology Seminar (1 unit)

Minor Coursework (6 units)

PS/PSIO 900 - Research units  (4 units) 

Form Comprehensive Exam Committee

Complete the Plan of Study GradPath form.

Spring:

PS 696c - Student Forum (1 unit)

PSIO 696a - Physiology Seminar (1 unit)

Statistics Course (3 units)

Minor Coursework (3 units)

PS/PSIO 900 - Research units  (4 units)

Complete GradPath Forms:  Comp Exam Committee Appointment Form and Announcement of Doctoral Comprehensive Exam (To be completed after the written portion and before the oral portion of the Comprehensive Exam)

Complete Comprehensive Exam by the end of the term/Summer/early Fall term of 3rd year

3rd Year

Form Dissertation Committee

Complete GradPath Form:  Doctoral Dissertation Committee Appointment

Write Proposal and get approved by Dissertation Committee and submit Proposal with the Proposal Approval Form to the program coordinator

Complete second 20-30 min. Student Forum Presentation

Fall:

PS 696c - Student Forum (1 unit)

PSIO 696a - Physiology Seminar (1 unit)

PS/PSIO 920 - Dissertation units (4 units)

Spring:

PS 696c - Student Forum (1 unit)

PSIO 696a - Physiology Seminar (1 unit)

PS/PSIO 920 - Dissertation units (4 units)

4th Year

Complete full length (at least 40 minutes) Forum Presentation  *Must be completed at least 1 semester before final defense*

Fall:
